As the holidays quickly approach, the jovial spirit of the season can be seen and heard on the Emerson College campus and in the surrounding Boston community. Stores fill with decorations, streets boast bright holiday lights, and students stir in their classrooms in anticipation of the festivities to come.
Amidst all the excitement, however, it is easy to forget that not everyone is as fortunate as we are. With this in mind, Emerson’s community service club, Imagine: Students Reaching Out, has decided to take part in bringing joy to lesser financially fortunate children in the Greater Boston community.
For the second year, Imagine is participating in a program called Frosty’s Friends. Frosty’s Friends is sponsored by Boston Cares, the largest organization in New England dedicated to community-oriented volunteering. The goal of Frosty’s Friends is to provide holiday gifts for kids from Greater Boston’s emergency shelters, community centers, low-income housing programs, educational programs, and day care centers.
Agencies help kids write a letter to “Frosty” requesting the gift they are hoping for this holiday season. Boston Cares collects these letters and distributes to volunteers who play “Frosty” by purchasing the gift requested by the child. As a proud partner of Boston Cares, Imagine has committed to answering the letters of twenty children this season.
In order to purchase the gifts these kids request, Imagine will host several fundraising events in November and December. After last year’s success, Imagine will bring back the gift card drawing, in which students may purchase candy canes for the chance to win a variety of different gift cards to some of Emerson students’ favorite stores. Other fundraisers will include a gift wrapping day at Borders®, in which Imagine volunteers will wrap customer’s purchases and collect donations, and another drawing in which three winners will receive giant gift baskets of candy from Sugar Heaven. All proceeds from these fundraisers will be used to purchase high-quality gifts for the letter-writers.
Imagine asks for your support as an aware and compassionate college community to help make this year’s Frosty’s Friends project a success. Donating even the smallest amount of your money, time, or support will contribute to making this season a merry time for everyone.
